Nia Glassie's Killers Sentenced today

See Link Guilty-verdicts-in-nia-glassie-trial.html

Brothers Wiremu Curtis, 19, and Michael Curtis, 22, today received life sentences with minimum non-parole periods of 17.5 years for Nia's murder.

Her mother, Lisa Kuka, 35, was sentenced to nine years imprisonment on two manslaughter charges.

Oriwa Kemp, 18, was sentenced to three years, four months imprisonment and Michael Pearson received three years for their ill treatment of the toddler.

Justice in this case has been seen to be done but what about the thousands of other children like Nia who suffer dreadful abuse at the hands of their families in New Zealand?

Who is going to be reponsible for making sure that there is zero tolerance for any form of child abuse in Aotearora.

UNCIEF Report Ranks NZ as amongst worst in OECD for child abuse

A 2003 UNICEF report showed that New Zealand has one of the highest rates of child death from maltreatment (physical abuse and neglect) among rich OECD countries.

It ranked 25th on a league table of 27 countries with 1.2 deaths per 100,000 children

  1. It's heartbreaking to see this picture of the beautiful precious little Nia. A friend of mine in the UK forwarded me an article about this and asked me if it was true. If what happened to this child actually happened. I was ashamed to reply 'yes'. What is wrong with these people? And people like them? What makes one human treat another human, a defensive little vulnerable one at that, that way. It is absolutely disgusting and overwhelmingly heartbreaking when I think of what that poor little girl had to endure before she finally and painfully left this world. I say bring back the death sentence. Harsh you say? I don't think so. Those animals are now going to go to jail so that we the tax payers can feed their putrid mouths 3 times a week. I don't condone violence but in this case, if I hear that they have been hurt in some way in prison by their fellow inmates, I certainly won't be shedding a tear. They are scum. Lower than scum. To look at their faces makes me feel ill. The only good thing is that Nia is at rest now and away from the treacherous hands of these animals and her useless, good for nothing, piece of faeces of a mother.

  2. It's appalling that human being can do such terrible things to each other, it's beyond comprehension that this could be done to a child.

If an animal savages and kills a child we'd have no compunction in putting it down. Why should we be any less lenient with a human?

The difference is that people are aware of the harm they do and of the difference between right and wrong.

They will spend the rest of their miserable, pointless and wasted lives living with the consequences of their actions.

Every day they will be looking over their shouders waiting for retribution from other prisioners and warders, whilst their families forget them and move on.

Perhaps that is a more fitting sentence than the quick release of death? to feel the same pain and daily humiliation that they put Nia through.

They should be locked up for the rest of their lives.

    May she rest in peace.
